CNN -- Eight Florida teenagers -- six of them girls -- will be tried as adults and could be sentenced to life in prison for their alleged roles in the videotaped beating of another teen, the state attorney's office said Thursday. The suspects, who range in age from 14 to 18, all face charges of kidnapping, which is a first-degree felony, and battery, said Chip Thullbery, a spokesman for the Polk County state attorney. Three of them are also charged with tampering with a witness. Everyone involved in the case was under a gag order imposed by a judge.

The teens, who are between the ages 14 and 18, face kidnapping and misdemeanor battery charges. Three also face a felony charge of witness tampering. The judge also issued a gag order requiring everyone involved to not speak about the case, according to the Associated Press. In the videotape, released earlier this week by the Polk County Sheriff's Department, the year-old victim was literally backed into a corner as fellow teens screamed at her, threatened her and ultimately beat her unconscious.

The six girls were seen by the judge via video uplink from the jail where they were being held. They and two male classmates were charged as adults with battery and kidnapping in the March 30 attack in Lakeland, a lower-middle-class town in Central Florida. The beating left year-old Victoria Lindsay, a cheerleader, with a concussion and two black eyes. The combination of violence, girls, video and criticism of the Web seems to have made the case a magnet for attention and outrage. The Internet, in particular, has become the preferred outlet for comment.
