THE INNOVATORS: First paddle-shift transmission
THE INNOVATORS: First paddle-shift transmission - CAR Magazine
The cars we drive today were influenced by these pioneers. The paddle shifter, or flappy-paddle gearbox, has transcended its original application in F1 cars and found its way into everything from underpowered crossovers and hatchbacks with CVTs to SUVs and family sedans. The placement of paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel or the steering column meant drivers could manually shift gears while keeping their hands firmly on the wheel, making it easier to maintain control at extremely high speeds. Fast forward to and the release of the knee-tremblingly beautiful F marked something of a renaissance for a Scuderia that had endured mixed fortunes in the previous two decades. Enter the F F1 Berlinetta. Essentially setting the standard for electro-hydraulically actuated manual gearboxes in Formula One cars, Ferrari decided to transfer its motorsport knowhow to the road with the development of its Selespeed transmission. The whole operation is overseen by a central processing unit that monitors such parameters as throttle valve opening, vehicle speed, engine revs, temperature and present gear selection, as well as the transmission presets Normal, Sport, Ice, Automatic.

How did we reach this point? Scuderia Ferrari realised there were significant performance advantages to be had by using an automated clutch in Formula 1 racing. This Ferrari invention revolutionised the world of motorsport — and of road cars, too. With its proven, race-winning status, it was only a matter of time before paddle-shift automated gearboxes were adopted in road cars.
Ferrari's late s F F1 machine was its first road car to introduce an racing-style gearbox with paddle shifters. The prancing horse launched the F in Australia in and it was available in three body styles - the Berlinetta coupe, Spider convertible and GTS targa top. The original version was a looker, introducing softer lines after the hard edges and strakes of the s. In , the Italian marque launched an updated F1 version of the sumptuous two-door which featured an F1-style clutchless manual transmission with gears changed via steering wheel mounted paddle shifters.
